We’re proud to celebrate Zahra’s outstanding contribution to the mining and resources sector through her PhD project at the Training Centre.

With over a decade of experience in data modelling and machine learning across industry and academia, Zahra’s journey began 15 years ago with predictive modelling for galvanised steel quality. Since then, she’s applied her expertise across diverse industries.

Her PhD focused on integrating real-time sensor data to develop an online model for optimising grinding mill performance—balancing particle size and mineralogical constraints. These optimisation methods have already been successfully applied to a range of engineering challenges.

Zahra has now completed her PhD and secured employment in the industry—an inspiring example of research translating into real-world impact.

Special thanks to Ley Chen, Prof Max Zanin, Prof Chris Aldrich, Dr Richmond K. Asamoah, Prof Frank Neumann, and all our industry partners for their invaluable support.

The Training Centre was a place where I  learned extensively about the mining industry and strengthened my skills in modelling and optimisation. It allowed me to engage with real-world challenges, expand my professional network, and build lasting friendships. The Centre also supported me in attending several national and international conferences, which greatly enriched my research experience and professional growth.” – Dr Zahra Ghasemi
