π¦ Training Centre’s Graduate Spotlight
Weβre proud to celebrate the journey of Sultan Abulkhair, who joined the Training Centre as HDR14 in 2021.
Originally a mining engineer from Kazakhstan, Sultan brought his expertise in geostatistical modelling to start his PhD with the Training Centre in 2021. Sultan’s project focused on developing fast and reliable algorithms for updating resource knowledge using production sensor data. His work brings us closer to smarter, faster decisions in mine planning, comminution, and processing.
With the guidance of Peter Dowd and Chaoshui Xu, and the support of PETRA Penny Stewart and Maptek Simon Ratcliffe, Sultan successfully completed his PhD in June 2025. He now continues his research with the Centre as our third postdoc, extending the impact of his HDR14 project.
π¬ βI am grateful to experience what it truly means to do collaborative research. The Training Centre provided me with many opportunities to work with brilliant minds from industry and receive valuable feedback from some of the world’s leading academics. This helped the HDR14 project to combine academia’s scientific depth and innovation with industryβs practical expertise.β β Dr Sultan Abulkhair
